Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
