A trader earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

One account, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a wager.
